DSC for Government Tenders: Which Class, Where to Buy, What It Costs
If you bid on state e-procurement portals or submit e-tenders requiring digital signing, a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is mandatory. Getting the wrong type is a common and expensive mistake.
What you need: a Class 3 DSC, either Individual (for proprietorships, partnerships, and authorised signatories) or Organisation type (for companies/LLPs bidding in the entity name). The token is a USB device with a 2–3 year validity. Buy it from any CCA-approved certifying authority — eMudhra, Sify, Capricorn and others are common.
What it costs: expect ₹1,000–2,500 depending on validity and provider, plus courier for the physical token. You can also get the eSign-based option in some portals, but for NIC state portals a physical Class 3 token remains the safest choice.
Process: apply online with PAN, Aadhaar, and video KYC, then wait for the token to arrive (2–5 days). Register the DSC on each portal before your first bid — this registration is separate from GeM (GeM seller registration normally does not require a DSC; state e-procurement portals do).
Common failure: buying a Class 2 DSC (phased out for most tenders) or an individual DSC when the bid has to be signed in the company name. Check the tender document's DSC requirement before purchasing — or ask us and we will tell you exactly which one fits your target portals.
